Meet our 2018 graduate of the year: Jack Sinnot

Posted by Rebeca Romero on 27th Jun 2018

We met Jack at this year's Middlesex University graduate show, His staircases immediately called our attention, beautifully designed and skillfully hand pulled we could not resist to stock them at East End Prints. Every year we choose a talented graduate and offer him the opportunity to showcase and promote his or her work, Jack is our 2018 graduate of the year! He popped by the shop to drop his beautiful prints and we sat for a chat, here is what he had to say about his course, inspirations and expectations for the future.

EEP: Hi Jack, tell us a bit more abour yourself, where did you grow up and how you discovered your passion for illustration

J: I'm 22 years old and I was born and raised in Medway in Kent. I always enjoyed art at school and would always be doodling in my school books. However, it wasn't until I had a drawing competition with my older sister (my mum being the judge) that I realised maybe I could take it further. I then went to study at UCA in Rochester where it became clear to me that illustration was most suited to me.

EEP: What was the thing you enjoyed the most about your course?

J: I loved my course so it's hard to choose what I liked most. My tutors were great, they encouraged me to experiment with lots of different concepts and materials that I wouldn't have necessarily tried before, screen printing being one of them. Also the facilities were amazing, and free which is a bonus!

EEP: Tell us a bit more about your staircases, where did the idea come from?

J: The idea for my staircases came when I was laying in my room and the pink sunset was shining through my window onto my wall. I thought it would make a beautiful illustration, however, I wasn't so happy with it so I started experimenting with different locations. I liked the idea of making something we see every day but don't really take much notice of, into something colourful and eye-catching.

EEP: Could you walk us trhough your process? How were this gorgeous prints made?

J: My process for these prints starts with Adobe Illustrator where I created digital images of pictures of stairs that I had collected. In illustrator I experimented with colour to find out what worked and what didn't. I then separated each colours onto different layers which I transferred onto a silk screen. Then after hours of mixing colours, making sure registration was accurate, panic, and tears, VOILA!

EEP: What are your plans now that your course has finished, what are you looking forward to?

J: My plan now is to continue to create more of these images and perhaps make a new set based on a different location. I also plan to hassle as many people as I can until somebody wants to hire me.
