1. Put offcuts of leftover wallpaper to good use by covering drawers in a menagerie of colours and patterns. A great way of injecting life, vibrancy and texture into grey walls, it’s sure to give old pieces a new lease of life too.

2. Get creative and add a final flourish to your chest of drawers by painting around the edges of the drawers and surfaces in a pastel peppermint green.

3. A little pot of blackboard paint can give a lot of joy and it is incredibly easy to make your own – just mix 250 millilitres of matte paint in the colour of your choice with two tablespoons of powdered tile grout. Personalise the finished effect with some creative chalk work.

4. Painted furniture has undergone something of a revival and makes the perfect weekend DIY project. Give a tired old chest of drawers a new lease of life by painting it in a pretty faded shade of pink for a feminine take on a black room.

5. Look beyond traditional furniture when planning your bedside table. Replacing the drawers from a chest of drawers with distressed wooden crates (embossed with oversized letters or numbers) will create an air of shabby chic.
