Indie Prints is a new artist to East End Prints. We’re loving his typography prints and his amazing vintage styles!

Inspired by book covers, advertising and music, David Lawson’s prints are great pieces of art that look like they will fit in anywhere, and still be eye catching.

Hey there,

As a start to this interview should I call you David Lawson or Indie Prints?

Hello, Dave is fine!

Where did you get the name Indie Prints?

When I first started most of my stuff was related to the 80's indie music scene, it was the first thing that came into my head,

And I'm stuck with it now!

What inspires your work?

Old paperback covers, vintage advertising, Swiss Modernism , music lyrics, place names, maps, music hall posters, old shop signs,.....almost anything really!

You have a mass of vintage/retro gig posters for sale, are those your own designs or do you have a collection stashed away somewhere?

I kept a huge stash of flyers and gig promos from my gig going days in the late 80's, early '90s.

When I rediscovered them a few years ago, they were so evocative of that era, the bands, the venues, the scenes, that I reformatted and framed a few of them for Etsy, although I'm concentrating on my own designs now.

Why typography?

I have a fascination with words. Particularly with the London prints, it's all about the evocative place names, and the right combination of typeface and words can be as powerful as an image in evoking a sense of time and place, an emotional response. It's also such a versatile medium, the possibilities are endless.

And finally, if you had the resources to create anything what would you make?

I've always wanted to design record sleeves, but I guess that's more about opportunity than resources!
