Rocket 68

Rocket 68 is designed & run by Illustrator and designer Jill White. Jill has been in the design world for 24 years

and particularly enjoys using traditional media alongside the digitally produced designs. We had lovely chat with

her and here is what she told us about her work, inspiration and being a freelance illustrator in London.

My mother is an artist, and from a very young age I knew that was what I wanted to do, I wanted to be an illustrator

and never entertained the thought of doing anything else!

Growing up in the West Indies was such a vibrant and inspirational atmosphere to grow up in, and I loved colour and

painting from a very young age. I studied Natural History illustration and my style has really 'evolved' over the last 20

years. Over that last few years I have taken inspiration from 'retro' and particulary 1950's and 1960's illustration.

Far from my days of painting very tight detailed pieces, I now adore simple bold shapes and pared down prints, such

as Luchienne Day's work and contemporary artists like Ineluxe.

MALISSA BROWN

Malissa Brown is textile designer living and working in East London. She has been working in textiles for

over twelve years, designing contemporary womenswear prints, selling to retailers, leading fashion houses

and interior brands in the UK and Worldwide. Her new work concentrates on print for the home, creating

limited edition screen prints on paper.

"Printing this way, as opposed to digitally, allows me to play with layering colour and also adds a beautiful print

quality you can only get with a screen" -Malissa Brown

She gets particularly inspired by geometric patterns seen in architectural structures and the manmade, liking to

mix this with the fluidity of mark making inspired by natural textures.

Being NEON one the strongest trends for this spring/summer 2015, we at East End Prints couldn't be more

excited about introducing you to Malissa's limited edition luminous three colour screen PRINT range

WILL CLARKE

I first became interested in printmaking as an art student in Bath, and have now been working as an artist in South London for six years. Having experimented with various styles, I now focus primarily on architectural imagery. Some time ago I undertook a six-month drawing of London, as seen from the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, and have been fascinated by architecture and the urban landscape ever since. Screenprinting, more than any other technique, gives me the precision and control I need to reproduce very detailed line drawings. To this detail I like to add bright blocks of colour and an element of abstraction – none of my drawings are exact renderings of what I see – in order to produce urban scenes that are animated and, I hope, a little unusual. All of my works are drawn and then screenprinted by hand to a limited edition. Each print will inevitably look a little bit different, but I love the variability that is intrinsic to the printmaking process.

ALFRED & WILDE

Alfred & Wilde is an East-London based design brand producing bold geometric and typographic art prints, stationery and homewares, founded by artist and designer Simon Mitchell.

The graphic designs are inspired by the architecture of London, clean lines of Scandinavian design, and the energy and vibrancy of Hackney in East London – home to Simon’s studio and the largest community of artists and galleries in Europe.

The first collection of Alfred & Wilde hand-pulled screen prints and tea towels showcased Simon’s cool use of modern metallics and bold graphics, featuring modernist London landmarks. The latest Platonic Solids collection builds on this theme, inspired by a series of beautiful geometric shapes with an ancient mathematical history.

All products are made by independent manufacturers and artisans in the UK, using FSC certified papers where possible. You can find Alfred & Wilde at good design stores and independent boutiques across London and Europe. Throughout the year you may also spot us at selected markets and shopping events, particularly in East London.
