Two years in and we are still seeing plenty of type based prints created and sold.. and its not just an EAST END thing. Since the Keep Calm and Carry On phenomenon 'type based art' or 'prints with text' have gone stratospheric.
In a time when Britain was about to go to war, 1939, the Keep Calm and Carry On poster originated by the Ministry of Information to boost morale. It is perhaps no surprise that as Britain finds itself dragged into war yet again, people find these so appealing.
There has been plenty of subversive content and outtakes appearing as a reaction to this success. Our very own Alison Gilchrist and Nigel Costley have created a unique version fusing the Keep Calm message along with Cameron's drive to create the Big Society.
'Does My Society Look Big in This'? and Fiona Watson 'Calm Down, Calm Down' from the Scousers can be purchased through EAST END PRINTS.
Hooray for type!
I have always been fascinated with the patterns, rhythms, forms and colours of nature in a microscopic and macroscopic sense.
