An interview with Teresa Rego, our new fun floral artist

Introducing our new illustrative artist, Teresa Rego! Teresa focuses on creating bright and fun floral prints that are guaranteed to liven up any space. Read on to find out more about Teresa and her practice.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, who you are and your practice?

Hi, I am  Teresa Rego, I am an illustrator currently based in Porto, Portugal, where I run my own studio and shop. I graduated from an MA in illustration at Camberwell College of Arts London in 2018. I have since then been collaborating with a variety of brands for packaging, shop windows or pattern design. Brands such as Prada, Hendricks, Vans, Scotch and Soda or Clinique, to name a few.

What is your creative process?

I make a lot of collage and drawings as well. Lately I have been trying to make more life drawing of plants; I like to create textures with painting or oil pastel. I usually start by making everything manually and then adding colour digitally.

Where do you draw inspiration for your art?

Mostly  nature. It also draws my attention when there's interactive situations between nature and cities, where nature textures and organic elements dialogue with more geometric shapes and static elements.

Your work is so bold and bright, how do you want people to feel when they interact with your art?

I like to feel extreme joy and satisfaction when I look into one of my works, like all the pieces fall together and they are exactly where they are meant to be. I want people to embrace colour as the amazing thing it is, and that they feel welcomed when they walk inside a room where one of my illustrations is on display.

You grew up in Portugal, how has that influenced your work/design style?

To be honest I am not sure. I grew up surrounded by nature, plants and fruit. When I moved to London and start developing my illustration style, somehow I continued to search for that contact with vegetation and more organic shapes. My university project was related with Green areas in London in contrast with the surrounding big city. I was always drawn to colour, and I think living in a sunny country probably had some influence regarding that.

Have you got any exciting upcoming projects?

I have a few exiting projects for the future, a stationary collection with a known international brand and more exciting packaging.

Out of your collection, have you got a favourite print?

It's not an easy choice as I have designed hundreds of illustrations. I would say the Red Poppy on Blue Vase, it’s a print I made about 2 years ago and is still very popular.

A fun question to finish off; you paint a lot of vases, what’s your favourite flower?

 Also a difficult question. I do love tulips but I cant resist a Magnolia tree.
